In
September 2002, a Festival Committee was formed (with assistance from the town
of Carleton Place, the Carleton Place Canoe Club and the local chapter of
Civitan International) to present the First Annual Carleton Place Dragon Boat
Festival. Our first year was met with great success; team participation exceeded
expectations, hundreds of visitors from all over Eastern Ontario and beyond were
attracted to the Dragon Boat Races. Riverside Park, in the heart of the town of
Carleton Place was alive with colour and activity.
Since
the festival inception, the Festival has raised over $32,000 that has been
donated to local organizations.
This
year will focus on promoting and supporting The Carleton Place & District
Memorial Hospital.
On
September 13th, 2008, the town of Carleton Place will once again find Riverside
Park teaming with excitement. Preparing for another successful year, the Dragon
Boat Festival Committee anticipates as many as 40 teams – over 800 paddlers and
drummers coursing across the finish line with a large number of spectators
cheering them on. Visitors from all over Eastern Ontario will be drawn to this
spectacular event.
